Modernized a Web Development Bootcamp with Cutting-Edge React Curriculum

Updated webdev bootcamp curriculum for Canadian EdTech company and successfully led first cohort

Background

A Canadian EdTech company was promoting a web development bootcamp at a local university symposium. The promoter was an organizational leader and after connecting on a number educational and technical topics we agreed that I might be a good fit as an instructor. After passing three rounds of interviews I was contracted to teach the program.

In preparation for the role I audited their content and found a great opportunity to update their tech stack and teach new skills. I created a proposal and presented to the organizational CTO. After review we agreed that I could lead the new cohort with my updated curriculum.

My Contribution

I assessed the existing curriculum and recommended significant updates to align with current industry practices, emphasizing modern JavaScript and React, particularly React Hooks, which had just been introduced in 2020. The program also lacked learning outcomes associated with version control systems, so I created lessons and exercises on Git.

I developed new many new hands-on exercises, shifting the program’s focus to practical skills with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React. The classes were initially conducted in person, with daily interactive sessions and real-world project development.

When COVID-19 lockdown measures abruptly began, classes immediately transitioned to remote learning. To help students adapt to this unexpected shift, I facilitated a timely and relevant project — a COVID-19 heatmap. Students successfully integrated live health data into their projects, creating valuable additions to their professional portfolios.

Project Outcome

The revamped curriculum significantly improved student engagement and skill acquisition. Students successfully transitioned to modern, marketable web development skills.

The cohort smoothly adjusted to remote learning, and the COVID-19 heatmap project became a standout portfolio piece. One student notably secured a full-time web developer position after completing the bootcamp.
